The Alter Eco Dark Chocolate Almond bar

Growing up, Halloween was about getting THE BEST candy. He/she with the most almond and peanut-packed chocolate was a wealthy individual. Let this bar and its endless almonds take you back to the time when riches were so much more than money. And share it with someone this Halloween – together we can strive for a more ethical Halloween.

Here’s where to find it.

Alter Eco is committed to the farmer through and through with the range of their products (rice, sugar, quinoa and of course chocolate). Certified by Trans-Fair USA, they work to alleviate some of the biggest issues ailing farmers today by working with cooperatives, like El Ceibo in Bolivia where this cocoa came from, and they offer pretty solid information about what you’re investing in.

The Green & Black’s Organic Mint Dark Chocolate bar

Inspired by Southern California’s unnecessary and unwarranted mid-October heat wave, this week’s bar of the week is the only cool thing going on around here. It turns the throat into a temporary sweet, crisp fall day, as it should be.

Find it near you!

Green & Black’s Organic chocolate pays the farmers of Belize’s Toledo Cacao Growers Association a fair trade price, which meets TransFair USA certification standards.

The Chuao Firecracker

Fantastic spicy dark chocolate meets tiny explosions (literally) in the mouth upon savoring this bar. Explosions. And chocolate. Epic.

Here’s where to find it.

Chuao chocolate is sourced solely from Venezuela, where cacao farmers already earn above market prices due to the quality of the region’s crop. Check out Chuao’s social responsibility here to learn more about the issues they do address in the Venezuelan cocoa industry.

The Equal Exchange Milk Chocolate ~ with a hint of hazelnut ~ bar

As with life, the magic of this chocolate bar is subtle and obscure, but powerful. The concoction of milk, sugar and organic & fairly traded cocoa in this masterpiece is insanely good (and addicting), but it’s that “hint of hazelnut” that changes everything. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this little reminder that the best things in life are hidden within sweet sweet chocolate.

Where to find it: Equal Exchange is carried by Wholefoods Markets, and I assume many other organic and fair trade grocery stores. Check the ones nearest you, or shop on Equal Exchange’s web site.

Equal Exchange buys all their products from fair trade farming co-ops. Read about their business practices here.
